Denmark is one of the most digitalised payment economies in Europe — almost nine in ten in-store payments are digital — built around two structurally different rails. Dankort still runs ~40% of card transactions, but it has lost share steadily to international schemes and Apple/Google Pay. MobilePay (Vipps MobilePay since the 2022 merger) carries the mobile leg with ~4.5m users out of a population of ~6m. The krone is pegged to the euro via ERM-II at the central rate of 7.46038, and the Riksbank-equivalent debate about cash resilience and offline payments is now an explicit policy priority.
Tab 03
Rails & infrastructure
The instant rail, the RTGS spine, the card switch, the direct-debit scheme, and the country's CBDC stance. Each rail is reported with operator, launch year, and 2024 flow so the relative scale across rails is readable at a glance.
CBDC status is deliberately granular: live, pilot, preparation, live stalled, and sceptical, no pilot are different things.
Denmark sits outside the euro and outside the Digital Euro perimeter. Nationalbanken's stated position (2023, reaffirmed 2025) is that there is no compelling case for a retail digital krone given the maturity of existing private rails (MobilePay, Straksclearing) and the ERM-II peg, which would create monetary-policy implications around any standalone CBDC. The Bank participates in BIS-CPMI wholesale workstreams but has not committed to a retail or wholesale pilot.
Instant payments
Straksclearing (and SEPA Instant for cross-border)
The instant leg typically carries the vast majority of retail consumer flow in modern payment systems — and sits in direct tension with card networks and wallets for the same transactions.

Real-time gross settlement
The RTGS spine clears high-value interbank flow — including the settlement of the instant-rail cycles and card-network net positions. Transaction count is modest; cleared value is enormous.
